So take your pick; either David Cameron is a straight-talking, no-nonsense politician not afraid to call a spade a spade when it comes to our foreign affairs, or he fundamentally fails to appreciate the finer nuances of political diplomacy and by doing so, puts at risk delicate ongoing negotiations, our international relations and our role as a strategic world power.
Where does the truth lie? Probably somewhere between the two and when we find out may not be for some time. As an aside, I have always been slightly bemused by the UK Government’s insistence that we should in some way be the guardians of the world’s democracies.
Anyway, all this puts me in mind of those moments when for example my wife asks me to decide which of the suggested tiles for the new bathroom are the best choice. I know there is a right and a wrong answer (which she has already determined) but it is working out which of those it is, while appearing to make my own mind up which is the challenge. David Cameron might be able to bluster his way through most diplomatic situations, but his approach could be disastrous when it comes to our bathroom tiles.
