Awards Fever

Share this page:

Say what you like about industry awards (and some usually do, namely that they are self-indulgent, self-serving and the winners sometimes apparently unfathomable) but you will not hear me criticising them and I am sure that you will appreciate that has nothing to do with the fact that on Wednesday of last week I managed to win one of them.

I was the lucky recipient of the South Yorkshire Insider Dealmakers Award for Corporate Lawyer of the Year. Now before there are any accusations that there must have been some "behind the scenes" underhand dealings to secure the award, I can confirm that the shortlisted individuals for the awards are nominated by the deal making firms in the region and that an independent panel of experts make the final decision based on the number of nominations received and each nominee's completed questionnaire. For the record I did not even know who was on the panel of experts before the awards ceremony.

The award itself is really a reflection of the quality of the rest of the team here, because successful completions of transactions are dependent on a number of people in the team all delivering on their parts at the right time so while it might be my name on the trophy it really was a team effort. What was most pleasing for us as a firm is that it is the first time in the award's history that it has gone to a lawyer from a non-international law firm.

Having said all that, the gloss was take off it a bit by the compere's comments. I am not going to spell them out, but either he took quite a shine to me or his comments were laced with irony and he really thought I had a face for radio. As you can imagine, my colleagues have not let me forget it.
