Bribery - it's closer to home than you think

It is just as well that the Bribery Act 2010 has not yet come into force, or there would be two very troubled parents in our house. Recently, (and some people will have become bored with my complaints about this by now – I apologise if that is the case) we have been having trouble getting our 2 year old to sleep through the night. We thought it might be a number of things health related, but a trip to the doctors suggested that whatever the reason, it was not to do with his health.

Last night we decided that if he woke during the night, we were going to be kind but firm and (not as is so easily done) simply nurse him back to sleep. I was prepared for all the tears and the anguish this would cause (that’s me you understand not our 2 year old) and true to form he woke at 3.30am. Usually it is me who does the night shift if he wakes but on this occasion my wife took pity on me and got up to him.

I was amazed when she was back less than 10 minutes later and all was quiet from his room. I asked her over breakfast how she had managed it. ‘Easy’ she said, ‘I just told him that if he went back to sleep, I would take him to the toy shop today.’ On second thoughts, I would be prepared to face prosecution under the Bribery Act 2010 if it meant I got a decent night’s sleep.
