Literacy Gets a Legal Helping Hand!

Four colleagues from Yorkshire law firm Keeble Hawson have been doing their bit, to help ensure that some of the younger members of our society develop their reading and communication skills.

Trainee Solicitors Thomas Lillie, Isobel Cliffe and Laura Short together with Paralegal Stacey Evans, volunteered for the literacy programme run by Learning Partnerships in October last year.

The scheme run by the Leeds based charity Learning Partnerships, recruits, trains and places volunteers from local businesses and the community in schools and after school clubs to support children's literacy.

Stacey, who with the rest of the team has now been working with children from St Patrick's Catholic Primary School on Torre Road, Leeds for over two months, said this week:

"We have all found this scheme very rewarding. We each read with four children, aged seven to nine, every Tuesday. It's great to think that just an hour out of our day can be spent providing four children with fifteen minutes individual attention."

Gail Clark, the Volunteer Manager of Learning Partnerships added:

"It's fantastic that companies like Keeble Hawson encourage their employees to get involved in our volunteer literacy programme supporting children in local schools. Not only do volunteers provide practical help to improve children's reading levels, but they act as positive role models for the children to see and aspire to."

"Evaluation has shown that working with a volunteer helps to develop the children's speaking and listening skills and improve levels of self-esteem and confidence as well as increase their reading levels. In turn, volunteers develop their own interpersonal, communication and team building skills. A win:win situation for all involved!"
